SET DECORATOR

Memory: Inigo, my Belgian Malinois, made his film acting debut as a police search-and-rescue K9. He loved it!

Cyprus Tree added another layer to my journey—a role as Set Decorator, an official title in the art department. With limited experience and a finite timeline, this project was a whirlwind of coordinating set lists, sourcing props, and managing my expectations. The film’s locations varied, from a quaint kitchen to an eerie backyard filled with statues, each environment adding a unique challenge to the project—excitement brewed as I jumped into my first big project of my Second Year.

Although the experience felt fast-paced and, at times, overwhelming, I learned valuable skills in set organization, sourcing, and how to bring subtle character to spaces without overstatement. I hadn’t had this many sets on a project yet, so learning to balance the needs of each space was a new challenge. Though I felt slightly unqualified, each prop and decor decision strengthened my understanding of how even the smallest details can define a space.

The project ended on a positive note, but my struggles continued off-set. J, along with his mother, were still casting judgment on my health struggles, leaving me feeling ostracized in my own home. His rude behavior at UNCSA left me ostracized within my department. We were working on our documentary Envisioned through the fall, but I felt increasingly alone.  Yet, working with the few friends I had in the art department reminded me of the power of art to create community and connection. I was grateful for the support of new colleagues and the focal point Cypress Tree provided in a spinning world.
