Memory: Sitting with the crew on the deck, watching the sun rise over the mountains—a serene moment after a night of shooting that brought a sense of accomplishment and new connection.

The summer after my first year at film school, Killing Lust marked my first time designing outside of the familiar setting with J. We were shooting in the scenic woods of Linville, NC, with a modest budget that covered only the essentials. This project was my first solo design role, transforming natural spaces into cinematic environments and shooting in a much larger location. It was challenging, especially being with a new team and navigating my first experience working without J by my side and outside of school. On location, my job was made simple by the excess of great decor to work with and redesign, giving the set a very authentic mood.

I drew on skills I hadn’t used in years, like setting up a darkroom—a skillset dating back to 2006—that brought authenticity to a crucial scene. Working closely with my new team, particularly one of the Bunnies, I realized I could establish myself independently. This project required intentional design choices, an opportunity to work with layers and textures that blended seamlessly with nature, and a chance to refine my style.

It was more than just a project; it was an experience that taught me I could build something meaningful and original, creating beauty even under constraints. It also represented a mental shift as I began working without J, who was casting shadows over my reputation at UNCSA. I didn’t realize then, but I was forging relationships that would last years into the future.
